Winthrope Hiers (Born 1956) was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. His father was a construction worker and his mother was a mathematician for the Atomic Energy Commission. Before he was a year old, the family moved to Savannah, Georgia, where his father began working for Seaboard Railroad. He attended elementary school at Hancock Day and middle and high school at Savannah Country Day. Hiers studied at Armstrong Atlantic State University from where he received both a bachelor's and master's degree in education. Over the past more than 30 years, he has taught middle school in Tennessee and Georgia - Richmond Hill, Hoboken, and Savannah where he currently teaches 6th grade science at Oglethorpe Charter Middle School. In the course of time, photography became more than a method of recording family memories for him. In the early 1980's, he discovered a special feeling of excitement when he photographed the natural world.

In the years that followed, he began photographing weddings. He then moved on to travel and adventure photojournalism with credits in such magazines as Chevrolet Friends, Peterson's Photographic, Mountain Bike Action, Camping Life and Blue Ridge Country. His photographs have been selected for the cover of Smokies Guide - the Great Smoky Mountains National Park publication, as well as displays in each of the park's interpretive centers. His interest has now expanded to production of fine art giclee prints. He began showing photographs at art festivals in 2008, and over the years he has placed in a number of photography competitions.
