John Lawrence Wall Art

John Lawrence (Born 1933) was born in Kent. He describes his art as impressionistic, vibrant and for the moment. He has a passion for boats and has been drawing them since he was six. The artist first made a name for himself in the 1960’s when he was commissioned to produce a set of engravings of ceremonial swords by Wilkinson. Those images appeared as weekly full page adverts in the many national newspapers; they were used to advertise razor blades. He later illustrated campaigns for Unilever, Princes salmon and Castrol. In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked for some major advertisers. Lawrence produced illustrations for personal checks and bank notes, and a series of 7 Christmas advertisements for Harrods.

Unfortunately, Lawrence had a heart attack in 1993, and decided to make some changes to his life so he could concentrate on his oil paintings. Lawrence was encouraged, under the tutelage of the artist Eddie Franklin, to develop his painting style. Marine scenes continue to be a big part of his work along with townscapes and landscapes. The artist paints mainly from life and invites viewers of his work to share the moment and feel the warmth of the sun or the cold splash of the sea, which he has skillfully captured on canvas. Lawrence was educated in Salesian schools – from Burwash to Sussex to Cowley, Oxforshire and finally to Hastings School of Art and Design. He paints full time and his work features in international collections where they have received many positive reviews.
