Thomas Bretland Wall Art

Thomas Bretland (Born 1802 – Died 1874) was born in Nottingham. As the son of the owner of a carriage and coach business, his father was keen for him to join the family firm and so he became an apprentice in 1816. He excelled at the job though he is said to have disliked it. However, since he had started sketching at an early age, his main aspiration was to train as an artist. By 1828 he had become a partner in the family business but was also receiving commissions for animal portraits. It was during this time that he married Nancy Ingham. His father died in 1840 and Bretland passed the carriage and coach business into his brother’s hands and took up animal painting full time. He got encouragement from Lord Middleton who was one of his important patrons. Other patrons included Lord Baron Rothschild and Chesterfield, the Dukes of Montrose and Buccleuch.

Upon the death of his wife in 1843 (leaving 2 daughters), he started to travel widely from his base at Sneinton painting commissions in Ireland and Scotland as well as various parts of England. He married again in 1852 and with his second wife, had 5 more children. It was around this time that he moved to Nottingham and became a burgher of the city. His subject matter covered animal portraits as well as hunting scenes and landscapes. Bretland worked mainly in oils and some of his works are very good. Most of his works were privately commissioned so they passed directly into private hands and are therefore little known.
