Joseph Nigg Wall Art

Joseph Nigg (1782 –1863) was a painter from Austria, with painting on porcelain as his specialty. He was born in Vienna, and studied with Johann Baptist Drechsler at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1800, he worked as a flower painter in a porcelain factory in Viennese. He worked here for more than 40 years. After 35 years of working here, he got involved in holding classes in painting at the factory. Flower painting became immensely popular with the advent of the Biedermeier Era, and was also to be found on large porcelain plaques. Nigg also created pastel drawings, watercolors, oil and paintings. Many of his paintings, two of which are "Grandmother's Bouquet I and II" have earned much popularity as print and poster reproductions.

With his depictions of fauna and flora quite representative of nature, the artist is one of the most important representatives of flower painting by Biedermeier. He continued in the tradition of his Dutch predecessors. His work took a turn in style and technique that was described as an approach that’s freer and that was in alignment to his spiritual stance. He said that while his studio may have appeared as though he was painting alone, in truth, he was dancing and with many muses. In many cases, he’d develop an idea for a piece and then maneuver tactfully the unforeseen outcome. Nigg approached the white canvas with unclear expectations and allowed the process to dictate the end result. His art is found in many private and corporate collections around the world.
