American watercolorist and painter, LaVere Hutchings (1918 - 1998) was active and lived in California. He had a Bachelor of Arts degree. During the Second World War, he enlisted as a soldier in the United States Army and taught art. He stopped oil painting in 1965 and started to investigate acrylics and pastels. Because he was looking for "transparency", he then discovered watercolor. He said that the other mediums did not have transparency. Hutchings owned a school/gallery in Jamestown, California. He was highly desired and well known. His art is hung at BYU, in LDS Museum in SLC, and elsewhere. He was featured in SW Art, Art West, Pallett Talk, North Lights, and has 2 Walter Foster books to his name, plus a hard-bound book, plus many Hallmark cards, prints, etc.
He also wrote a third book which found its way onto the shelves of thousands of watercolor students and professionals throughout America. Hutchings was a member of the East Bay Watercolor Society, the Society of Western Artists, the Central California Art League, the National Watercolor Society, the Midwest Watercolor Society, and the Whiskey Painters of America. He not only enjoyed painting but also enjoyed teaching others how to paint. Hutchings liked challenges. That’s why he liked to paint. His style is determined and is focused on the simplicity of beauty of his subjects. He believed that that there is no formula in producing art and artists should let the process and the image to lead them to where it must go.
