Marie Krane is a studio artist based in Chicago. She’s the founder of the performance and installation collective Cream Co. She has exhibited in private and public institutions in Europe and North America, including exhibitions at DePaul University Art Museum; Rijks Academie (Netherlands), Berkeley Art Museum; the Herron Gallery; the Fleming Museum; the Hyde Park Art Center; and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Marie obtained a BA degree in philosophy with honors from Northwestern University. She also holds a MFA in painting with honors from the School of the Art Institute. examples of Her works on large-scale are held in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Berkeley Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
Her work has been reviewed and is also in many private collections and included in texts and essays, including Six Stories from the End of Representation by James Elkins, published in 2008 by Stanford University Press. In the tradition of the still life, the artist takes the flowers she cuts from her garden as her subject. In her color-filled large paintings comprising thousands of single recurring marks, however, paint is not a vehicle she uses for depicting a sensorial, embodied impression of a flower, as many use in conventional still life pictures. This is because what she represents in her paintings is the flow of time through the flower. Marie keeps a cut flower for many years. She closely observes their course of life until death.
