Description:
Painted after a period of relative loneliness, The Sunflowers expresses the radiant warmth and joy felt by a man whose melancholia had been magnificently banished. The person responsible for lightening Van Gogh's mood so radically was his fellow artist, Gauguin. Their decision to move into Van Gogh's Yellow House in Arles during the summer of 1888 saw Van Gogh embark upon a series of four sunflower paintings, of which this is the most famous. All were intended to decorate Gauguin's bedroom, but only two were eventually deemed worthy of Van Gogh's signature.
To many, The Sunflowers represents "the greatest still lifle in the history of art" - more real even than real flowers. Their "light on light" technique, in which multiple shades of yellow magically enhance one another, were to Van Gogh the embodiment of happiness. The whole composition is alove, bold, and furiously animated. What we are confronted with is not an "artistic frenzy" though, but controlled vitality.
However, life does not always imitate art, and shortly after completing The Sunflowers, the control Van Gogh exerted in his painting was found lacking in his personal relationship with Gauguin and the two men found it increasingly difficult to agree on how their art should progress.
