The Card Players
Paul Cezanne
The Card Players

Additional Information About this Piece
Description:
The subdued tonality is similar to that of Cardplayers, in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Here the two men are dressed in contrasting jackeets, one a cold blue, the other a warm yellow-ocher. Other warm accents revolve around the tabletop, reaching out to the edge of the canvas in a bright red spot. There are certain discrepancies with "natural" vision. The legs of the left player, for instance, reach out too far under the table, yet they have a distinct compositional function in the overall picture scheme. Time seems to stand still for the right cardplayer, with whom Cezanne created the idealized image of a solitary man absorbed in his own world. The artist admired the local peasants of his hometown, who sat as models for his paintings of cardplayers. The motionless face is painted with hues of glowing orange, and the sunken eye has only been brushed in with a sijjmple stroke of brown. The result of year-long studies on the subject of cardplayers and pipe smokers, this painting has rightly been regarded as one of the summits of Cezanne's achievement. Concentrating on two figures emerging from a dark background, with its harmony of purple, deep blue, black, reddish brown, and yellow-tan, the atmosphere is mysterious and dark, full of somber and serious meditation.
