Description:
"The Kiss," in which munch, like Klimt, used a melancholy undertone, belongs to the latter category. Klimt's 1895 painting "Love" conveys a sense of valediction, and in 1890 Munch created a drawing which he himself entitled "Adjo (Farewell). A number of drawings and oil sketch finalley led in 1892 to Munch's oil painting "The Kiss." It is still, in some respects, a genre scene, executed in soft and relaxed brushwork. It shows a couple, fully clothed, at the far right of the picture, in front of a curtain, next to which a large window reveals a view of an evening street. Three years later, in 1895, Munch produced an etching of this composition but this time with an important shift in emphasis. This time, he placed the naked couple at the center of the of the picture and structured the entire compositition strictly symmetrically with the window mullions and windowsill as axes. This decision to use a symmetrical approach was clearly influenced by a new turn-of-the-century stylism. The curtain on the right-now given a counterpart on the left-no longer serves to shelter the lovers protectively, and they are exposed more than ever to than ever to the gaze of the spectator, with a vulnerability further underlined by their nudity. Yet at the same time, for these human figures, such exposure represents an emancipation from concealment and revelation, while their central position in the composition heightens their significance. Even in such a work, there are elements that foreshadow Munch's progress from stylism to expressionism, in which the human individual becomes the central theme of creative work.
