Description:
Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, University of Nebraska, Lincoln. The inspiration for "Room in New York" came from the light interiors Hopper observed while walking at night through his Washington Square neighborhood. The work is a synthesis of the many rooms he had viewed over an extended period of time. Hopper's intentional blurring of the facial features of the couple is a reminder to his audience that the role of the voyeur gives only a glimpse, not an in-depth understanding, of the lives of these individuals.
