When he was fifteen his father gaven nim materials to build a cat-boat. Although it never sailed very well, Hopper did consider a career as a naval architec. As an adult he owned a boat, but later, at Jo's insistence, he sold it. No doubt "Ground Swell" reflects Hopper's summers in New England on his own boat and on those of others.
